The Modern Foreign Languages Department

Head of Department - Miss K Humphreys

Context

The MFL department consists of three specialist teachers who are passionate about language learning. The department has three dedicated language learning classrooms and the department all work together to foster a love of language learning and different cultures within each class.

Curriculum

The majority of students at Longdendale High School study a language (either French or Spanish) from year 7. During transition whilst the students are still in year 6, students will pick which language they will study for their time here with us at Longdendale. Students in all year groups study a variety of topics that help to develop their knowledge of the language, the phonics of the language and the culture of countries that speak that language. During Key Stage 3, students study the basic grammar and vocabulary linked to each topic, which provides them with a strong foundation to build on at GCSE. Within the MFL curriculum, students develop the four key skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. When students reach their GCSE exam, these skills are assessed equally. We use the AQA exam board for our GCSE examinations.

Enrichment Opportunities

Enrichment in the MFL department starts straight away in September with activities to celebrate the European Day of Languages. We also invite travelling theatre companies to perform in either French or Spanish for year 7 and 8 classes. During year 9 and 10, we also have the Spanish Exchange and the French trip to Normandy where students are able to develop their language in ‘real life’ scenarios.
